Rachel’s Story
Growing up as an at-risk youth and latch-key kid, my school therapist requested my diagnosis of ADHD and learning disabilities to help address my behavioral disruptions in the classroom.
I participated in an ACE score test. An ACE test is a method provided for individuals to measure the trauma they have experienced. 67% of people usually have a score of at least 1. A person with an ACE score above 4 was at a much higher risk of substance abuse, risky behaviors, mental illness, homelessness, psychological and medical complications. 0.3% of the population have a score of 8 or more. I was a fourth generation female in my family to have an ACE score of 10.
I grew up in an unstable environment and left home at fifteen. During the next two years, I made critical decisions that set me on a track for success. I was able to earn my diploma and become financially independent. I have learned how to create and maintain lasting relationships, and have spent hundreds of hours training in the field of mental health.
I have spent sixteen years working as an emotional support counselor in homes and hospitals. In 2022, I founded a nonprofit organization, Opal Hope & Healing, to give back to my community. I know first-hand what it is like to struggle with suicidal thoughts on a regular basis.
Opal Hope & Healing provides our participants an opportunity to see themselves with value, who can succeed, and who have the potential to change their future. Our goal is help to women see they are not alone, that their community is aware of them, and wants to support them in their courageous decisions to change their lives.
